A Preliminary Study on Development of Korean Version of Mental Adjustment to Cancer Scale(KMAC)

Abstract
|

|
Objectives：Development of psychological morbidity in patients diagnosed with cancer largely depends on their coping and adjustment to cancer. To measure individuals’ coping to cancer, Mental Adjustment to Cancer scale(MAC) has been used widely in psycho-oncology research. This study tested the reliability and validity of a Korean version of Mental adjustment to Cancer scale(KMAC) and thus to imply its cross-cultural applicability.
Methods：By convenient sampling, a final sample of 67 heterogenous cancer outpatients at Hemato-oncology unit of a university hospital completed KMAC, CES-D(the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale), and HAQ(Health Assessment Questionnaire).
Results：Internal consistency of KMAC was satisfactory(Cronbach α= .84). And principal component factor analysis revealed three factors：Hopeless/Helplessness, 9 items；Anxious Preoccupation, 11 items；Fighting Sprit, 13 items). HH and AP were significantly inter-correlated(p<0.05) and they were also correlated with scores on CES-D(HH p<0.01；AP p<0.001).
Conclusion：This study supports the validity and reliability of KMAC that this scale can be applied to Korean patients. Difference with original version was discussed in context of cross-cultural aspect and delicate problems in translation. This was reflected in the final modified version of KMAC and whole scale was provided in the appendix.
