Objectives£ºDevelopment of psychological morbidity in patients diagnosed with cancer largely depends on their coping and adjustment to cancer. To measure individuals¡¯ coping to cancer, Mental Adjustment to Cancer scale(MAC) has been used widely in psycho-oncology research. This study tested the reliability and validity of a Korean version of Mental adjustment to Cancer scale(KMAC) and thus to imply its cross-cultural applicability.
Methods£ºBy convenient sampling, a final sample of 67 heterogenous cancer outpatients at Hemato-oncology unit of a university hospital completed KMAC, CES-D(the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale), and HAQ(Health Assessment Questionnaire).
Results£ºInternal consistency of KMAC was satisfactory(Cronbach ¥á= .84). And principal component factor analysis revealed three factors£ºHopeless/Helplessness, 9 items£»Anxious Preoccupation, 11 items£»Fighting Sprit, 13 items). HH and AP were significantly inter-correlated(p<0.05) and they were also correlated with scores on CES-D(HH p<0.01£»AP p<0.001).
Conclusion£ºThis study supports the validity and reliability of KMAC that this scale can be applied to Korean patients. Difference with original version was discussed in context of cross-cultural aspect and delicate problems in translation. This was reflected in the final modified version of KMAC and whole scale was provided in the appendix.
